Feedback Friday: Cost of a Newborn

The experts say that it costs an average of $9-10k for the first year of a newborns life. This covers everything from your portion of medical bills to diapers, transportation, clothing, daycare and more.

Our question for you is:

How much did your child's first year cost you?

As usual, jump on over to the poll on the sidebar and cast your vote!

I don't know that I agree with that figure. Diapers cost a lot but some people use cloth (still costs something to buy them and wash them), and breastfeeding costs little more than the extra food Mom is ravenous for; transportation... carseat? Yes, that costs something but normally a baby goes where you go in the car, so no extra charge there. And many people care for their newborn at home, so no day care cost. Clothing is pretty cheap and oftentimes can be obtained second-hand as hand-me-downs from other family members (free in that case.)

I think it's kind of crass to break down the "cost" of human beings in dollars, by the way.

The expense of a baby always worried me, but in practice it's not that much. Like anything else you have to be mindful of how you spend. We cloth diaper, breastfeed, and buy things second hand. It's really not that much.
